Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
