No fewer than 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
